Whole new view -- Sam has been discharged from Colorado Childrens!
A friend mentioned during a really hard patch there is a post-op tipping point where recovery becomes exponential. We are so happy this was the case for Sam. He worked through the hard and with the encouragement of some really incredible hospital provided motivators — like a room visitor named Ruffles, a walk to a window to see a repelling Batman and a dog 'pawty' to attend downstairs — he found himself up and moving about through the pain and fatigue.
It's not a week I would wish on anyone but it's also filled with these bright spots and moments that will become memories of Sam's strength and brilliant personality.
Sam is doing great. Fatigue will continue to eb and flow and we have found he does have some light sensitivity in his eyes when outdoors in direct sun. The packing in his nose he is managing to tolerate well and signs of headache are subsiding.
The love and support we had from afar kept us going. The messages, silly memes and gift cards were daily reminders of the love holding us up. I also want to remember the parent/guardian community inside this hospital. There were several patient parents who helped us find the coffee, tipped us off to various hospital details and shared a smile on the way to and from the coffee. It's not a club anyone asks to join but the kindness shared with us in the experience was one I will think of with deep appreciation.
We will fly home on Sunday and are all very excited to be settled and continue resting at home.
From there we will hope to keep Sam healthy and healing until our return to CO Childrens on Nov 3 to begin the drug trial.
