How long will Sam be in surgery?
The surgery is transsphenoidal (entering through the nose) and they believe it will be 3-4 hours of procedure time.
How long will Sam be in the hospital?
We have been told to expect 2-4 nights as an in patient in the hospital.
Flying or driving?
We will fly to Denver and have gotten approval from the surgeon to fly home as well.
Is Ben going?
We feel really lucky to have the support that makes it possible for Ben to join us for the first few days. He will fly with us, spend our special family day in Denver together, be present for the surgery and then fly home on Wednesday with his grandparents.
We also get to have 3 grandparents join us and will have their full support both while at CO Childrens and the days following with care for Ben in KC.
How long will Sam be out of school?
This is all TBD. He will likely return for partial days after 2 weeks but we're going to take it one day at a time.
What happens after surgery
After recovery time is complete, Sam will begin the phase 2 drug trial in hopes of preventing regrowth of the tumor. We expect this to start about 6 weeks post-op.
How are we doing?
As a family, we are doing as well as I could expect. The curiosity and engagement of the kids is so refreshing and has been a fun way to combat big fears. We are all learning a lot together! The support of our family, friends and community has played a huge factor in all of us remaining positive and given so many things to look forward to. There's sure to be a bumpy behind the scenes factor that comes into play but we are so equipped with support I truly feel ready for most things.
